What Actually Wins In Rocket League 2v2?
The first major Pacifist Labs study forms part of the evidence base testing and refining AirCharged’s Rocket League 2v2 decision-making framework. It compares 2,234 paired replay reports and tests whether playing faster actually separates winners from losers inside the same rank.
The published results show a clear difference between the capacity to play quickly and using speed as a universal decision rule. Notably, Behind Ball remained significant across every tested level. By contrast, average speed did not.
However, this is a major checkpoint rather than the end of the project. The 2v2 dataset will continue to grow and be re-tested as new ranks, players, eras and replay samples are added.

Rocket League advice is full of confident claims: play faster, stay closer, challenge earlier, rotate wider or rotate tighter. What Is Associated With Winning?

In practice, this measures how often a player maintains a useful position behind the ball rather than becoming stranded ahead of the play.

First, every replay produces two linked observations: the winner and the loser. In turn, keeping those teams paired preserves the match context. As a result, the analysis is more useful than treating every team as an unrelated data point.

Notably, the higher Behind Ball team won more often from Platinum 1 through Professional play across the tested levels. Moreover, every result remained significant after correcting for the wider set of tested metrics.

Overall, across 2,156 valid paired reports with complete composite data, the higher Pacifist Score team won more than two thirds of non-tied matches. Therefore, the composite score was a strong separator in this dataset.

In other words, the aim is to use methods that can be explained, repeated and challenged. Even so, that standard still applies when the result does not support the original hypothesis.
For example, this robust test compares paired winner/loser differences without assuming every metric follows a perfect normal distribution.
Meanwhile, a second view of the same paired comparison checks whether the conclusion depends heavily on one statistical method.
However, statistical significance is not enough. In addition, Labs reports how large the difference is and how uncertain that estimate remains.
Finally, when many metrics are tested together, p-values are adjusted to reduce the chance of treating random noise as a discovery.
