Green Belt Third Stripe. Master The Carry Fake.
Learn to hold possession, present a believable flick or aerial threat and punish defenders who commit before you touch the ball.
Green Belt Third Stripe completes the carry-based offence trilogy. The same setup can now become a hook shot, flick, air dribble or a fake that lets the defender remove themselves from the play.
Win The Play Before You Touch The Ball.
The carry fake works because the defender must respect the flick and air-dribble threats you have already developed. You hold the ball, read the commitment and allow their defensive movement to create the opening.
This is not about mechanics. It is about composure, timing and defender psychology.
Present A Real Threat
Carry the ball in a way that genuinely resembles the flick or lift the defender has learned to respect.
Hold Until They Commit
Resist the urge to choose a move early. Keep possession long enough for the defender’s speed and spacing to reveal the decision.
Take The Space They Leave
When the defender jumps, lunges or turns away, continue the carry into the opening instead of forcing an unnecessary touch.

Control Turns Into Inevitability.
Players often lose possession because they believe every attack must end with a flick, jump or final touch. The carry fake teaches you that the threat itself can create the outcome.
Higher-Percentage 1v1 Wins
Letting the final defender commit first can create a simple outplay without forcing a mechanically difficult finish.
Safer 2v2 Outplays
Keeping possession reduces the risk of throwing the ball away while still applying pressure to the first defender.
Awkward Challenges
The defender is forced to act against multiple credible options, making their approach easier to read and exploit.
Open Nets Without Added Risk
A panicked jump or lunge can remove the defender completely while you remain grounded and in control of the ball.
A good fake does not look impressive. It looks unavoidable.
Four Mistakes That Make The Fake Harmless.
The carry fake fails when the threat is not believable, the spacing is wrong or the attacker loses composure before the defender makes a clear decision.
Ending The Carry Too Early
Releasing or turning away before the defender commits removes the pressure and gives them time to recover.
Failing To Sell The Initial Move
The defender will not panic when the carry does not resemble a real flick, lift or attacking option.
Faking Outside Challenge Range
Excessive distance gives the defender time to wait, observe and respond after your intention becomes obvious.
Panicking When They Hesitate
A patient defender does not mean the fake failed. Keep control and choose the next action rather than forcing the touch.
Build The Fake From A Credible Threat.
The objective is not simply to avoid touching the ball. It is to maintain enough control and danger that the defender makes the first costly decision.

02
Present The Real Option
Carry the ball as though the flick or air dribble is still available. The fake needs that credibility.

Wait For The Commitment
Read the defender’s speed and spacing before deciding whether to carry through, flick or choose another option.
